Smart opponents with even half a brain just won't respect you and non-stop assault you on wakeup and you'll lose more often than not. So get ready for LOTS of matches where after one knockdown at the start with no meter, you get ambiguously and safely assaulted every wakeup until you are dizzy and eat the perfect. He can try to poke but it'll get beat or counter hit, he can backdash and eat option selects, he can throw but likely get stuffed because backthrow is so freaking slow, or he can parry as a total guess and either guess right every so often, or get armor broken, thrown, or outguessed. If learned properly, he is a powerful character that can win any matchup.ħ) All of 1-6 combined result in a character that without meter, on his wakeup, has NO OPTIONS.

Gouken is a unique character with unusual properties on many of his attacks, as such he takes a fairly long time to become proficient with. Gouken should ideally have at least one EX bar at all times for a potential EX Hurricane anti-air or reversal, or an EX Rush Punch for max damage punishes and hit confirms. As a rule of thumb, if a character or player has a difficult time getting through his fireballs, continue using them. EX Flip can be easily reacted to and walked under for a full punish, having an EX Hurricane blocked leads to a level 3 Focus or neutral jump punish from the entire cast, his backdash is subpar, and all versions of his Counter are throwable.Ĭhoosing to be defensive or offensive with Gouken depends entirely on the matchup. Learning how to block on wakeup is important, as his wakeup reversal options are limited and meter dependent.

Staying on your feet and becoming familiar with his ground pokes and anti-airs is critical. Gouken is most effective as a zoning character, but cannot rely on projectiles alone in most matchups.
